Zulal Garan Dmak 2022

Zulal Garan Dmak 2022

Vayots Dzor, Armenia (75 cL)

Rare and nearly forgotten, this grape offers a distinctive expression of Armenia’s extraordinary winemaking heritage.

A nearly forgotten Armenian grape reveals a textured, floral white balanced by remarkable freshness and mineral tension.

Garan Dmak is one of Armenia’s rarest indigenous white varieties, and Zulal offers a particularly distinctive interpretation of it. Grown in the Armavir region on volcanic soils at around 1,050 meters, it produces a dry white that combines breadth with freshness. Green apple and wild flowers emerge on the nose, while the palate brings white cherry, citrus and a subtle caramel note from maturation. Bright acidity and a saline mineral character keep the wine energetic despite its fuller texture.

Founded in 2017 by Aimee Keushguerian, Zulal — meaning “pure” in Armenian — was created with a clear purpose: to reveal the character of Armenia’s indigenous grape varieties without masking them behind international styles. The winery works particularly with vineyards in the Arpa Valley of Vayots Dzor, where high elevations, volcanic and limestone soils, and dramatic temperature variations create ideal conditions for wines marked by freshness, precision and distinctive character. Zulal also explores lesser-known Armenian varieties, contributing to the rediscovery of one of the world’s oldest wine cultures.
